The economic consequences of community capacity-building projects

Martin Knapp Completed   2014

Introduction

It has never been more important to understand and foster the potential of resources available within communities to prevent, delay or meet social care and health needs. This project examined the economic case for investing in community projects (such as time banks, ‘navigator’ services, befriending schemes and community development initiatives). Each of these projects aims to harness the resources of local communities – the knowledge, skills and expertise of local populations, together with local voluntary and statutory bodies – to achieve positive outcomes. These outcomes can include building safer, stronger, happier communities, as well as improving the wellbeing, independence, social inclusion and health of individuals.
