The changing role of occupational therapy services in social care: a scoping study

David Challis Completed   2014

Introduction

Community-based occupational therapists (OTs) play an important role in supporting service users and carers, promoting independence by enabling people to maintain activities of everyday life. For example, by providing access to items of equipment that might assist in personal care and tasks around the home and conducting assessments for larger housing adaptations. However, their role has changed and will continue to do so through new government policies and evolving local priorities. Greater emphasis is now placed on supporting those at risk of needing hospital care, or on discharge home from hospital. OTs also have a new role in determining the help that service users need by supporting people to identify their own care requirements whilst offering specialist assessments to those with more complex problems.

This study aimed to create a new OT diary tool.
