Career Development Awardee
daniel.moonman@sheffield.gov.uk
I work as a team manager in adult social care, committed to good practice and to increasing the confidence of practitioners and helping them to embrace and authoritative and compassionate style of working. In addition to collegiate support, I typically draw on two resources: systemic practice (as a qualified family therapist) and research that is relevant to practice.
Daniel’s research interests include supervision in adult social care (having carried out a Masters in Research on this subject)

Supervision in adult social care
The job of a social worker is overseen usually by a manager in regular meetings called ‘supervision.’ There is a need for supervision to ensure that service users and carers get what they need and want. Also, to keep social workers safe and well at work. However, there is little research on supervision, especially in adult social care. So, there is a need to show what good supervision looks like. I therefore propose to complete the following activities during the award: –
- First, to receive training on observing supervision sessions between social workers and their team managers.
- Second, to create a sort of ‘map’ of what others have written on supervision.
- Third, making use of my training and the map, to request funding for original research on supervision in adult social care.
Throughout these three steps, I would consult with social workers and team managers who are directly involved in supervision and service users and carers who are indirectly involved. I would also learn by receiving and giving support to researchers with similar interests.
The award would enable me to develop in my role as social work team manager, by researching issues that are important for adult social care, starting with delivery of high-quality supervision.
