Staff profile

To date, my career has largely been in research, working on qualitative projects that aim to improve care and support for children and young people with complex conditions and their families. Within this area, I have worked closely with young people with neuromuscular conditions, predominantly in partnership with the user-led organisation, Pathfinders Neuromuscular Alliance. In 2023 I joined Northumbria University as a Lecturer in Health and Social care.

My career development award provided the time and funding to work collaboratively with a group of young adults with neuromuscular conditions to scope research priorities for social care, taking one priority forward as the focus of a submitted funding application. The award focus and methods were important because the topic of social care for this group of young adults has received far less attention than, for instance, their health needs. Additionally, research has largely been done to rather than with young adults with neuromuscular conditions. Therefore, the award sought to (a) shine the spotlight on a vital yet unacknowledged area, (b) co-produce evidence and derive priorities to move the research agenda forward in this space (c) work collaboratively and alongside young adults with neuromuscular conditions throughout.

George’s research interests include:

  • Social care for disabled young adults.
  • Palliative care.
  • Co-production methodology.
