IMPACT

Improving Adult Care Together

IMPACT is the UK centre for implementing evidence in adult social care. Working across the four nations and with co-production at its heart, they draw on insights from research, lived experience, and practice knowledge to make a difference to front-line services, and to people’s lives.

These three case studies showcase the added value IMPACT brings as a UK-wide centre focused solely on implementing evidence in the reality of social care services and people’s lives.

You can find out more about the IMPACT delivery models and how you can build them into your future School for Social Care Research bids below.

IMPACT draws on knowledge from different types of research, the lived experience of people who draw on care and support and carers, and the practice knowledge of social care staff.

It has four strategic objectives:

  • Increasing the use of high-quality evidence, leading to better care practices, systems and outcomes
  • Building capacity and skills in the adult social care workforce to work with evidence of different kinds to innovate and deliver better outcomes
  • Developing relationships between a wide range of stakeholders across the sector, to improve outcomes for people who draw on services and their families
  • Improving understanding of what elements of evidence implementation do and do not work in practice, and using this to overcome barriers

These are achieved via four main delivery models:

  • IMPACT Demonstrators employ a pair of strategic improvement coaches to work in a local system for 12 months to lead a large, strategic, evidence-informed change project
  • IMPACT Facilitators lead smaller, more bounded, more bottom-up evidence-informed change projects in more of a single agency setting (also 12 months)
  • IMPACT Networks focus on complex but everyday practice issues, with local groups all over the UK working on the same practical issue in their local area, but with the learning scaling across all groups over the course of the Network
  • Our Ask IMPACT team identify ‘hot topics’ in adult social care, producing rigorous but very practical and accessible guides on insights from the evidence

These are underpinned by IMPACT’s work around national embedding (scaling innovation not just by telling people about it, but by seeking to build lessons learned into national policy and practice).
