Adults make their own choice about where to live and what help they receive unless they do not have the ability to make this choice. If an adult does not have this ability then another person makes the best choice for them.
If a choice is made for the adult to live in a place where they have decisions made for them, where they are being monitored by other people and are unable to leave, then we need to make sure this is the best thing for the person to stay safe and well. To make sure this is done right we have a process called the ‘Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards’ where trained staff do an assessment to make sure that decisions are made in the best interests of the adult and that they are not too controlling.
The adult may have family and friends who can let staff know if they think the care is too controlling or if the adult is not happy with the care and I want to know more about these people. I don’t think we know a lot about these people and what they think. We often ask these people to tell us what the adult they look after wants but this may be hard for them to do and I want to make this easier for them.
