Information for presenters

SSCR Conference 2026

Submit your presentation (Google Form)

All presentations (slide decks, posters and, where applicable, accompanying files) must be submitted by 17:00 (BST) on Tuesday 1 September 2026.

If you don’t have a Google Account or for any other reason you are unable to upload your presentation file(s) via the Google Form, please email them to us at sscr@york.ac.uk before the deadline. Any general questions about the conference can also be directed to the same email address.

General information for presenters

Your oral presentation/ lightning talk will be scheduled within a themed session with an allocated Chair. More details about your specific session (timings, chair, location) will be shared with you via email. Please note that the session chairs will be keeping a close eye on timings. We have so much exciting research to hear about that it is important all presenters are respectful and stick to their allocated time.

Slides should be submitted as an MS Powerpoint file. There will be a screen and laptop in each presentation space at the venue. Your slides will be set up and ready for you to present at the venue on the day. In larger spaces, there will be microphones available (both for the presenter and for taking questions from the audience) and a wireless presentation clicker.

Presentations will be live captioned on the day. The SSCR Programme Team will be on hand to set up the AV equipment, provide support and help you keep track of timings.

Accessibility guidance

The School for Social Care Research is committed to ensuring that its research is accessible to all audiences. This document contains guidance and suggestions about how to produce accessible and easily understandable documents.

  • Use Plain Language to help organise and present information. The following checklist can help you apply plain language principles.
    • Understand your users and their needs before you write.
    • Use the words and phrases your audience uses.
    • Focus on simple, familiar language.
    • Prefer short sentences and straightforward sentence structures.
    • Write in the active voice.
    • Avoid jargon, technical terms and acronyms where possible. If you must use them, explain them clearly.
    • Organise content with clear headings and a logical structure.
    • Present information in the order users need it.
    • Test your content with representative users and refine it based on feedback.
    • Ask colleagues to review your writing and suggest improvements.
    • Consider the accessibility needs of all users throughout the writing process.
    • Design content to reduce unnecessary effort, confusion and requests for additional support.
  • Use a legible sans serif font and ideally Inclusive Sans, if this is not possible please use  Arial, Helvetica or Calibri and a font size of at least 12 points (14 points minimum for easy-read documents).
  • When using Word, use the in-built heading styles to help screen readers navigate your document. Avoid using bold text as screen readers may not recognise it.
  • Add alt text to images so screen readers can describe them to people with visual impairment.
  • Avoid low contrast colours in both print and digital documents.
  • Use the Accessibility Checker in Microsoft Word, Powerpoint or Excel to check your output and correct issues which reduce accessibility.
  • Where possible, avoid using tables and design elements that will make your document cluttered.
  • Documents should be A4 size and use flexible formats like HTML, Open Document Text (ODT), accessible PDFs, and Microsoft Word, so that users can adjust the layout, size, and font.
  • Please remember when presenting that you are sharing your work with  a diverse audience. It can be useful to try out your presentation with a range of audience members for sense checking purposes.
  • To find out more about making your presentation accessible read The University of East Anglia Dissemination Access Guidelines.

If you are ever unsure, please contact us at sscr@york.ac.uk and we will be happy to support you with making your documents accessible.
