The EconomicS-of-Social-carE-CompEndium (ESSENCE) project has been funded by the NIHR School for Social Care Research in two previous phases of the School. Its aim is to improve access to and the use of economic evidence within England’s social care system.
One important goal of ESSENCE has beenwas to simplify complex economic data and collaborate closely with people who work and commission social care services to help them make more informed decisions. As part of this, we found relevant evidence from previous research and turned it into clear, accessible information for commissioners, social care workers, and other key stakeholders. The result was the ESSENCE ‘Toolkit’, an online resource that offers summarised economic evidence on social care services, mainly for adults, and some children’s services. The Toolkit features an easily searchable database and case studies developed with input from our collaborators and advisory group.
A new study – ESSENCE-3 – started in January 2025 and aims to build on this earlier work to continue to update the collation and summarising of evidence.
